With 17,000 stores world-wide, it-s hard to remember that Starbucks was once a neighborhood hang-out in the heart of Seattle-s historic Pike Place Market district. Founded in 1971, the birthplace of the world-s most popular coffee chain hasn-t changed much in its forty-year history since zoning laws prohibit the owners from making substantial changes to the building. Whether you are a devoted fan or just want to stop by to people watch, the original Starbucks location is a fun destination on your tour of Seattle. During the day, the store is often crowded with people looking for photo-ops, so come early if you want to avoid the rush. However, during peak hours you are likely to be entertained by numerous street performers who provide first-class musical acts for their audience in a truly authentic Seattle tradition. Even if there is a long line, the skilled baristas usually keep it moving along at a decent pace and the coffee is well worth the wait for any Starbucks buff. Its close proximity to Pike Place Market makes the original Starbucks a great place to get a taste of quirky Seattle culture, especially with a fresh cup of steaming hot coffee in hand.

If you’re looking for a great Cajun/Creole style of cooking in the Seattle area, Toulouse Petit is the spot for you. There’s an excellent menu that starts from Buttermilk Beignets to Traditional Pecan Tart for dessert. The food is excellent and so is the service. The great thing about it is they have meals from breakfast all the way to dinner. Also, for those that like to partake in some early drinks, this is a great place for those kinds of beverages. For those that want to get a more Southern kind of vibe, there is the Crispy Fried Chicken Gumbo giving you a New Orleans feel to your dish.

The general decor is a bit more on the upscale/romantic side, so it would be perfect to relax here with your wife especially if you are visiting the general area. Prices of food can range from 10-30 dollars so make sure you have a full wallet and a very hungry stomach! It’s definitely a nice trendy place to meet some interesting people and have some interesting meals. You have the choice of choosing French, Cajun/Creole and more to satisfy your appetite. Check out Toulouse Petit and have a meal or drink.

There is a hotel to suit every taste and style of traveler in downtown Seattle. It runs that gamut from luxury to quirky, but there is nothing like the absolutely lucullan Fairmont Olympic Hotel. If you aren’t looking for opulent accommodations, this hotel is still worth a walk down University Street to see. Since opening in 1924, it’s elegantly appointed rooms have hosted several presidents, not to mention a slew of people on several travel advisory websites who have given it excellent ratings. Yes, it’s elegant, but does is have a Tea Room? Of course! It offers tea service daily from twelve until two-thirty. It even includes Champagne, if you like.

For all it’s old-world elegance the Fairmont Olympic’s rates are very reasonable. Starting at 211 a night for a deluxe king room it certainly competes with lesser properties for a good deal. The Fairmont is also home to Shuckers Oyster Bar, one of Seattle oldest oyster bars. Shuckers bar is exactly how you would picture an old Seattle oyster bar, wood paneling, tin ceilings and lots of excellent seafood. If you’ve had your fill of oysters elsewhere, check out the piano bar that features organic martinis. Yes, organic martinis, this is Seattle after all!
